A New Era for Shewbridge Coaching

And a New Home for Rational Thinkers

Something is wrong.

For the past several decades, Western cultures have gone adrift – cut loose from the Enlightenment foundations on which they were built. Rational thinking – the engine of three centuries of progress, wealth creation, longer lives, and mind-blowing technologies – is under attack.

The critics were there from the start, of course. The Romantic poets were writing about “dark satanic mills” almost as soon as the Industrial Revolution began. And the twentieth century brought a double-pronged assault: consumerism, which taught us to dream in possessions; and post-structuralism, which unmoored us from truth itself.

Reason, they said, was too cold. Too calculating. It left no room for the heart, the soul, or the mysteries of being alive. And besides – who wants to hear a pop song about the General Theory of Relativity?

But now, something deeper is happening. In the past, reason had worthy sparring partners – art, religion, intuition – each challenging it to broaden its scope, refine its claims, or temper its excesses. Today, we face something more insidious: a wholesale retreat from truth itself.

We see it in the workplace, where feelings often trump facts, and where appearances matter more than results. We see it in politics, where performative outrage outpaces reasoned debate. And we see it in education, where clarity and rigour play second fiddle to emotional expression.

And yet, beneath all this, something else is stirring. Millions of people – perhaps quietly, perhaps even reluctantly – are craving something better. They may not use these words, but they are hungry for depth. For integrity. For a way of thinking – and living – that helps them make sense of the world, navigate complexity, and stay grounded when everything else feels unmoored.

That’s where Stoicism comes in.

Not as a lifestyle trend. Not as a Pinterest board of quotes. But as a serious, results-orientated philosophy – one that teaches us how to think clearly, act justly, and keep our heads when everyone else is losing theirs.

This site is for those who want to take that path. Every week, we’ll publish articles on how to apply Stoic thinking in modern work and life. Not just theory – real-world reflections on decision-making, leadership, ambition, setbacks, and meaning.

And we’re built a free community – The Stoa – for those who want more than just content. It’s a place to connect with others who are serious about thinking clearly and living well, especially in a world that often seems to reward the opposite. That’s on its way, and you can let us know here if you’re interested in joining.

If you’re looking for a little more meaning, a little more purpose, and a little less noise, come on this journey with us. Join our band of rational thinkers, change-seekers, and quietly rebellious minds. Shake things up – not by shouting louder, but by getting to work on the one thing you can always control: yourself.

Let’s bring reason back. Together.
